In 2009, the Cologne City Council adopted the “Urban Development Master Plan for Downtown Cologne” as compiled by AS&P – Albert Speer & Partner as the basic tool for evaluating future action. The plan’s prioritized projects include remodeling Ebertplatz on the inner ring road. As part of the “7 p.m. every Wednesday – an Hour of Building Culture” series, “Haus der Architektur Köln” is organizing an event entitled “The Task at Hand: Ebertplatz”, which intends to make the public aware of aspects of the discussion that have to date been given little consideration.

In the “workshop discussion” (4:30 p.m.), which will be held on the occasion of the exhibition opening (6:30 p.m.), cultural and urban development strategies for the European city of tomorrow will be presented and discussed on the basis of exemplary concepts and projects from Cologne and Copenhagen. The focus of the discussion involving Bjarne Hammer, founding partner of Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Bernd Streitberger, the city councilor responsible for planning and building in Cologne, and Albert Speer, which will be hosted by Dietmar Leyk, will be on the topics public space, user-oriented participation, the design of characteristics, mobility and orientation.

EnEff: City Congress 2012
municipal contributions to the new energy policy
The first EnEff:Stadt-Kongress (Energy Efficiency City Congress), scheduled for January 17-18, 2012 in Hamburg will present the first findings and experiences from the ongoing pilot projects of the Federal German Economics Ministry’s energy efficiency research on the city and heating, respectively - BMWi-Forschungsinitiativen EnEff:Stadt und EnEff:Wärme, and discuss ideas for a new approach to energy at municipal level. Dr. Michael Denkel, AS&P will talk about the importance of the quarter for the energy-efficient city. The podium discussion on the challenges the new energy policy poses (“Herausforderung Energiewende”) will be conducted by high-class panel members.

The architect and urban planner Professor Albert Speer will be speaking at the New Year reception of the Liederbach community on Sunday January 15, in the Liederbachhalle, Wachenheimer Strasse 62. The title of his address: “The development of the metropolitan region – a challenge for Liederbach”. The reception starts at 11.15 a.m. The youth music school will provide the music.

At 1:30 p.m. on Christmas Day WDR is broadcasting a half-hour program about Prof. Albert Speer entitled “Er trägt einen bekannten Namen – Albert Speer, Architekt” (he has a well-known name – Albert speer, architect). The program is part of the series WDR is broadcasting on “Experienced History”, in which in each case, an era of German history is pieced together and related in the form of stories, reports and anecdotes. The author Ursula Deutschendorf conducted the interview with Prof. Albert Speer on September 8, 2010.

The potential sustainable urban and regional planning offers – 2011 symposium
The symposium will address park management concepts and promoting their acceptance among politicians and the general public. Those invited include experts from municipal authorities (e.g., from city and traffic planning, business development, urban development, public order departments,), the police, transport companies and local associations. At the symposium the traffic planner Michael Dinter, a partner at AS&P, will deliver a lecture on `Mobility in cities and the countryside – a look to the future’.

Urban Land Institute prize-giving ceremony
Designing cities worth living in is a continual process, based more than ever on cooperation between al those involved. Every year, in recognition of foresighted, sustainable commitment, the ULI honors personalities from the real sector with the ULI Germany Leadership Award. As the 2010 prize winner the Mayor of the City of Frankfurt, Dr. h.c. Petra Roth, has taken on the honorable duty, as patron, of organizing the 2011 awards ceremony, as well as the Urban Leader Forum in Frankfurt. Prof. Albert Speer, the winner of the 2010 ULI Special Award, will present the 2011 Special Award to this year’s winner.
